Microsoft’s Patch Fiasco: Windows 11 Update Cripples Global Backup Systems

A critical Windows 11 update leaves third-party backup tools broken, forcing IT teams to choose between cybersecurity and data protection.

When Microsoft’s April 2026 Patch Tuesday rolled out, IT teams braced for the usual post-update scramble. But few anticipated the digital chaos that would follow: backup systems across the world began failing en masse, leaving organizations exposed and desperate for answers. As the dust settles, a deeper look reveals how a single update - KB5083769 - sparked a crisis that no one saw coming.

The Anatomy of a Patch Gone Wrong

Released for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, the KB5083769 update was meant to shore up system defenses, addressing a slate of security vulnerabilities. Instead, it introduced a crippling flaw in the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) - a foundational component that enables reliable, point-in-time backups even when files are actively in use.

Almost immediately, system administrators and IT security teams sounded the alarm. Backup jobs began failing without warning, snapshot creation timed out, and data protection routines ground to a halt. The problem wasn’t limited to obscure vendors: Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud, Macrium Reflect, and UrBackup all acknowledged widespread failures tied to VSS errors.

The timing couldn’t have been worse. With ransomware threats and regulatory demands at an all-time high, reliable backups are the last line of defense for organizations of every size. Suddenly, the tools meant to save the day were themselves in distress.

The Microsoft Dilemma

Ironically, Microsoft’s own cloud backup feature escaped the fallout - because it doesn’t depend on VSS. But the company’s upcoming point-in-time restore (PITR) capability, currently in testing, could inherit the same flaw when it launches, raising new concerns for the future of Windows backup.

Faced with nonfunctional backups, vendors and experts have issued a risky workaround: uninstall the KB5083769 update. Doing so restores VSS and backup operations, but at a steep price - systems lose critical security patches, reopening doors to cyber threats the update was meant to close.

This leaves IT teams in a bind: protect against cyberattacks, or ensure data can be restored in a disaster. The trade-off is stark, and neither option is risk-free.

What’s Next?

As pressure mounts, Microsoft has yet to release a fix. In the meantime, organizations are urged to monitor vendor advisories, maintain offline backups, and prepare for rapid patch deployment once a stable update arrives. For now, the episode stands as a stark reminder: even well-intentioned security updates can have devastating, unforeseen consequences.

WIKICROOK

  • Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS): VSS is a Windows feature that creates backup snapshots of files or volumes, aiding recovery but often targeted by ransomware to prevent data restoration.
  • Patch Tuesday: Patch Tuesday is Microsoft’s monthly event for releasing security updates and patches to fix vulnerabilities in its software, typically on the second Tuesday.
  • Snapshot: A snapshot records the exact state of system data or user balances at a specific time, aiding recovery, audits, and data integrity checks.
  • Out: Out-of-Band Verification confirms identity using a separate channel, like a phone call or text, to enhance security and prevent unauthorized access.
  • Rollback: A rollback is the process of restoring software or systems to a previous, safer version after a faulty or risky update is detected.
