A Surface Mount Device (SMD) is a type of electronic component designed to be mounted directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB), rather than being inserted into holes as with traditional through-hole components. SMDs are typically smaller and lighter, allowing for more compact and densely populated circuit boards. This technology enables automated assembly processes, improving manufacturing efficiency and reducing costs. SMDs are widely used in modern electronics, including smartphones, computers, and networking equipment. Their small size, however, can make manual handling and repair more challenging compared to larger, through-hole components.
