A staging server, in cybersecurity, refers to a server set up by attackers to temporarily host and distribute malicious payloads, tools, or data during the execution of a cyberattack. These servers are often used as intermediaries between the attacker and the target, helping to obfuscate the attacker's origin and intentions. Staging servers can deliver malware, collect stolen information, or serve as command and control points for compromised systems. Security teams monitor for staging servers to detect and disrupt ongoing attacks. Legitimate organizations may also use staging servers for testing, but in a threat context, the term typically implies malicious use.
