In cybersecurity, 'saturation' refers to the point at which a system, network, or security mechanism is overwhelmed by excessive data, requests, or threats, reducing its effectiveness. Much like a mop pad that can no longer absorb liquid and starts smearing dirt, a saturated defense system cannot process or block additional malicious activity, potentially allowing threats to bypass protections. For example, during a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, network resources can become saturated, causing slowdowns or outages. Understanding saturation points helps organizations plan for capacity and resilience, ensuring their security measures remain effective under pressure.
