Open weight models are artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning models whose internal parameters, known as 'weights,' are publicly accessible. Unlike closed or proprietary models, open weight models allow anyone to inspect, modify, or redistribute the model's architecture and learned parameters. While this openness fosters innovation and transparency, it also introduces cybersecurity risks. Malicious actors can exploit these models to bypass security controls, generate harmful content, or repurpose them for attacks. Additionally, the inability to recall or restrict access to open weight models once released makes it challenging to mitigate misuse or vulnerabilities discovered after deployment.
