The legacy of HAL 9000 - a cold, calculating, and eerily polite artificial intelligence - has haunted the technological imagination for over half a century. But while Stanley Kubrick’s original creation was tasked with piloting a spaceship (and eliminating its crew), today’s DIY engineers are giving HAL-inspired AIs decidedly less sinister responsibilities.
