A germanium transistor is a type of semiconductor device that uses germanium as its base material instead of the more common silicon. Developed in the late 1940s and 1950s, germanium transistors were among the first transistors ever produced and played a crucial role in the early days of electronics, including early computers and radios. Germanium offers high electron mobility, allowing for faster switching speeds compared to early silicon transistors. However, germanium transistors are sensitive to temperature and have higher leakage currents, which led to their gradual replacement by silicon-based transistors. Today, germanium transistors are mostly of historical interest, though they are still used in some specialized audio and vintage equipment for their distinct electrical characteristics.
