An extranet is a private network that leverages internet protocols and public telecommunication systems to securely share part of an organization’s information or operations with external stakeholders, such as business partners, vendors, or suppliers. Unlike an intranet, which is accessible only to internal employees, an extranet provides controlled access to authorized users outside the organization. This controlled access is typically managed through authentication, encryption, and firewalls, ensuring that sensitive data remains protected. Extranets are commonly used for collaborative projects, supply chain management, and sharing confidential documents, enabling efficient communication and cooperation while maintaining security boundaries.
