The Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), formally known as the United Nations Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons, is an international treaty adopted in 1980. Its main goal is to restrict or ban the use of specific types of conventional weapons that are considered excessively injurious or have indiscriminate effects, such as landmines, booby traps, and incendiary weapons. The CCW consists of a framework convention and several protocols, each addressing different weapon categories. It aims to balance military necessity with humanitarian concerns, promoting the protection of civilians and combatants in armed conflict. The CCW is regularly reviewed to address new weapon technologies.
