An Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) is a device that enables traditional analog telephones to connect and communicate over digital Voice over IP (VoIP) networks. ATAs convert analog voice signals from standard telephones into digital data packets that can be transmitted over the internet or other IP-based networks. This allows users to use their existing analog phones for internet-based calling, often reducing costs and simplifying migration to VoIP systems. ATAs typically have one or more RJ-11 ports for analog phones and an Ethernet port to connect to a network. They may also provide features such as caller ID, call waiting, and support for fax machines. ATAs are widely used in both residential and business environments to bridge the gap between legacy telephony equipment and modern digital communication infrastructure.
