AI Trojan Horse: How Hackers Exploited ChatGPT to Crack Corporate Email Vaults

Cybercriminals weaponize trusted AI apps in OAuth scams to infiltrate Entra ID and steal sensitive emails.

When you think of ChatGPT, you likely picture a helpful AI chatbot - not a cybercriminal’s backdoor into your inbox. But recent investigations reveal that hackers are now hijacking the trust in big-name AI tools to sneak into corporate email systems, using the very permissions employees grant in the course of their daily work. The latest wave of OAuth-based attacks shows just how easily convenience can become a security nightmare.

The Anatomy of an OAuth Deception

The attack begins innocuously: an employee, perhaps eager to integrate ChatGPT into their workflow, adds the official ChatGPT service to their organization’s Entra ID environment. Presented with a standard-looking OAuth consent screen, the user grants permissions such as Mail.Read (access to their emails), offline_access, and profile data - believing this is a secure, business-boosting move.

What they don’t realize is that this seemingly routine action opens a digital side door. By manipulating the consent process, attackers exploit the trust placed in the ChatGPT application. Once permission is given, the attacker (often operating remotely through proxies like AWS Virginia) can access the user’s emails without their knowledge, siphoning off sensitive correspondence to attacker-controlled servers.

Red Canary’s threat researchers highlighted how this method leverages legitimate infrastructure and app IDs, making detection especially challenging. Audit logs and consent events - often overlooked - become vital forensic evidence. Telemetry reveals suspicious communication patterns, such as unexpected access attempts and data exfiltration.

Why OAuth Is the New Battleground

OAuth, the protocol behind “Sign in with Google/Microsoft,” is designed for convenience. But convenience can be fatal when permissions are abused. The attackers’ success hinges on social engineering: convincing users to grant broad access to third-party apps. Once achieved, the attackers’ footprint blends in with regular activity, evading traditional security tools.

The risk is amplified by the fact that permissions like Mail.Read often lack expiry, granting persistent access. Even non-admin users can unintentionally give away the keys to their inbox, providing a treasure trove for cybercriminals.

Lessons and Countermeasures

This incident is a wake-up call for organizations to scrutinize every third-party app and permission request. Monitoring for unusual consent events, restricting app permissions, and training employees on OAuth risks are now non-negotiable. As AI tools proliferate, so too do the opportunities for attackers to exploit trust.

In the arms race between attackers and defenders, the battleground is shifting to the very tools we trust most. Today’s AI assistant could be tomorrow’s Trojan horse - unless vigilance becomes the new default.
