An administrative takeover in cybersecurity refers to an incident where an attacker gains unauthorized, full administrative control over a system, network, or application. This is often achieved by exploiting vulnerabilities, stealing administrator credentials, or bypassing authentication mechanisms. Once in control, the attacker can modify configurations, access sensitive data, install malicious software, or lock out legitimate users. Administrative takeovers pose significant risks, as attackers can use their elevated privileges to escalate attacks, exfiltrate data, or disrupt operations. Preventing such incidents involves strong authentication, regular monitoring, timely patching, and restricting administrative privileges to only those who absolutely need them.
