An antibiotic is a type of medication used to treat bacterial infections by killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Unlike antivirals or antifungals, antibiotics specifically target bacteria and are ineffective against viruses or fungi. They are essential in modern medicine for treating illnesses like pneumonia, strep throat, and urinary tract infections. However, misuse or overuse of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance, making infections harder to treat. In advanced medical treatments, antibiotics can be incorporated into loaded scaffolds - special structures that support tissue healing while gradually releasing antibiotics at the injury site to prevent or combat infection.
